In last few years, we see more and more yoga brands asking about sheepskin yoga rug.
Not only from yoga studio, also from meditation center, wellness shop, even therapy clinic.
This is not accident.
Yoga market now care more about natural material.
Plastic mat, PVC mat, TPE mat, people already use many years.
Cheap, easy, yes. But also smell, sweat, hot, and sometimes feel “dead”.
Many practitioners want something more natural, more close to body feeling.
So from traditional yoga mat, market slowly upgrade.
Especially in yin yoga, restorative yoga, meditation.
These practice not jump, not rush. People stay long time on floor. Knee, ankle, spine, all need support.
Here sheepskin yoga rug come in.
I am from sheepskin factory. Honestly, before, we never think yoga people will use sheepskin.
We make rug, cushion, medical pad. But once we understand, it makes sense. Very sense.
Sheepskin yoga rug is simple thing.
It is real sheepskin. Wool on top, leather skin on back. Not woven. Not glued fiber.
Compare with rubber, TPE or cotton yoga mat, difference is very clear.
Those mats are flat. Sheepskin is 3D structure. Wool stand up. Air inside.
When you sit, wool move, but always come back.
Why sheepskin more suitable for slow practice? Because slow practice need comfort, not grip.
When you hold pose long time, pressure go deep.
Flat mat cannot help much. Wool can share pressure.
Some people ask, can it replace normal yoga mat?
To be honest, not always. Sheepskin is best for static, slow, ground work.
For fast flow, you usually put it on top of a normal mat.
Old yoga teacher already do this many years.
This is biggest reason.
Wool has natural spring. When knee touch floor, wool bend, not collapse.
Pressure spread, not point pressure.
Many customers tell us, “my knee pain less”. Especially older people.
Or prenatal yoga. Or therapy exercise.
Synthetic foam also soft, but after time, foam dead. Wool is alive fiber.
You press, it push back. Simple physics.
Wool is strange material.
Winter, it keep warm. Summer, it not hot. People always surprise.
Because wool fiber hollow. Air inside. Body heat go slow.
When you sit long meditation, body not get cold from floor. In summer, sweat also not feel sticky.
I use myself. Sitting on wood floor in winter. Big difference.
Sheepskin can absorb moisture. Around 30% of its weight, without feeling wet.
This is real wool behavior.
So during long practice, sweat go into wool, not stay on skin.
You don’t feel slippery like plastic mat.
Also wool dry faster than you think, if you air it well.
Many people practice barefoot, skin touch long time.
Natural wool feel soft, warm. No cold plastic feeling.
If tanning done right, no strong chemical smell. For sensitive skin people, this matter a lot.
We have customer with allergy to synthetic mat. Sheepskin is solution.
Comfort level:
Sheepskin win, no question. Especially for knee, hip, spine.
Grip & stability:
Yoga mat win, especially for standing pose. That’s why many people layer them together.
Breathability:
Sheepskin better. Plastic mat trap heat.
Cleaning & maintenance:
Yoga mat easier. Just wipe. Sheepskin need care. Shake, air, sometimes wash carefully.
Sustainability & eco-friendliness:
Real sheepskin is by-product of meat industry. Not plastic. If tanning follow REACH, AZO-free, it is very clean.
Practice type:
Fast vinyasa → yoga mat
Yin, restorative, meditation → sheepskin yoga rug
Simple.
Yin yoga.
You stay pose 3–5 minutes. Pressure build up. Sheepskin help.
Restorative yoga.
Bolster, blanket, long rest. Sheepskin give warmth and safety feeling.
Meditation & breathwork.
Sit long time. Spine need support. Ground cold is enemy.
Prenatal / postnatal yoga.
Body sensitive. Joint loose. Need soft but stable surface.
Therapy & floor exercise.
Many rehab center use sheepskin pad already. Yoga is similar logic.
You can use alone. On carpet floor, okay.
On wood or tile floor, better put normal yoga mat under. Because leather back can slide.
Some customers add non-slip underlay. That also work.
Size matter.
Too small, not comfortable. Too big, heavy. Common size around 60x90cm or yoga mat size. We also do custom.
Daily care is simple.
Shake. Beat lightly. Air outside, no sun.
Do not wash often. Wool is self-cleaning material. Many people over-wash, then complain.
If need wash, use wool detergent. Cold water. Hand wash .
Never hot water. Never dryer. Never strong alkaline.
Dry flat. Air flow. Be patient. Wool don’t like hurry.

This part I want say more. Many buyer don’t know where quality difference come from.
Wool density & length.
Dense wool give better cushion. Too long wool feel messy. Usually medium pile best.
Leather thickness & softness.
Too thin, tear easy. Too stiff, feel cheap. Good skin is flexible.
Anti-slip option.
Leather backing natural slippery. Some buyer add suede finish or dots. Depends market.
Size & shape customization.
Rectangular, oval, yoga mat shape. OEM matter for brand.
Tanning process & compliance.
This is important. REACH, AZO-free. No bad smell. This decide long-term customer complaint or not.
OEM / private label ability.
Logo label, packaging, color selection. Factory experience is key.
I say honestly.
Sheepskin is not fabric. Not foam. It is skin. Each piece different.
Factory who only “assemble” product, but don’t understand raw skin, cannot control consistency.
We start from raw sheepskin selection. Wool density, fiber strength, skin thickness.
We know which skin for rug, which for cushion, which for medical.
Batch consistency, this is hardest part.
But if factory do this many years, they know.
Also export standard. Many market require test. If you do wrong tanning, later problem big.
Sheepskin yoga rug is not for everyone.
It is not cheap product. It is not for fast, sweaty practice.
But for high-end, natural, comfort-focused yoga and wellness market, it has strong position.
For brand, it is good differentiation.
For user, it is comfort upgrade.
From factory side, I can say, this product is honest.
Good sheepskin, good tanning, good craft. No trick.
That’s why it last long in market.

Put it on top of a normal yoga mat, or use non-slip underlay. This is common way.
